Some before & after's.. and a tease....

This post has a bunch of pictures!!! Really not the ones you might think! LOL....
I was laying in bed this AM, enjoy our first cool crisp morning and reflecting on everything that has taken place at our little homestead in the last year....

This has been a year of change... Just a year ago my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer that had spread to her liver.. We were just getting over my FIL passing away after failing for the last 2 years and hubby going out to his place pretty much every weekend to help with chores around his farmette he had...

So none of this was even a thought just 12months ago... Well, we knew were doing the gathering room, it was long over do a for a EXTREME makeover...

So anyway hubby was online looking into something when he came across a picture of what appeared to be great house for sale... Lets just say it LOOKED more along the lines of a dream home! So yes we went and looked, as we pulled into the driveway, I turned to him and said, WELCOME HOME!! At that moment I thought we were moving!! Cape cod style, 2 porch's and on a acre of land, who could as for anything more right? WELL....

I just was not in LOVE with the inside. I felt like I had to talk myself into the house. It just didn't feel right. Though bigger then our home now, I was losing space. I was getting a basement, but losing the family room/gathering room. Rooms were smaller and some of my antique pieces weren't going to work. Now that is a problem....

Then there was the fact very little was updated in 30 years... Small bathrooms, now I have what I would consider small bathrooms, but these where smaller AND harvest gold in one, powder blue in another.... Just coming off a major bathroom remodel, I was like ICK!

OK, enough on the house, some of our friends just couldn't understand why we wouldn't go for it....BUT then there is the fact we has such GREAT neighbors here, I am 6 blocks from mom who now has the big "C" and asking me NOT to move.... Then there's hubby, working his butt off, and we are going into a bigger home, new mortgage and he's hoping to retire in 8 to 10? What am I thinking.....

OK, so I am out walking Knuckles one morning and I come home turn to hubby, I have had a brain fart, LOL... What if.... If we were going to spend "X". why not stay, spend way less and do this.....

So our home is a 70's style split level, nothing special, but we have called it home for the last 16 years, but it NEVER was a dream home...Kitchen eating area is so small, no dining room. We entertain a lot so it gets crowded... SO what if we add a 8 x10 eating/dining area off the kitchen.. Leave the kitchen alone, since that was done 7 years ago and still love it....and MAYBE add a front porch onto the house...

So being smart we did a list of pros/cons on moving or adding on.... we felt we could fix all but one thing we hated about the house, which was the long narrow driveway. OK, we can deal with that....

Sorry this is going on forever, like I said I was in a reflecting mood! So we bring in a builder that lives in the area and works on a lot of these homes in the area... Everyone is telling us it will be like $60,000 to do the kitchen and a porch... I'm like this is dead in the water then, not spending that...... So long story kinda short, we can do a 10x10 off the kitchen... No porch to much $$$ and I have to go the Village and ask for zoning change to add it.. what a pain...

So instead we add a addition off the back of the garage for more storage and a little work room for hubby... update electrical to garage and a bigger box in the house.... and took off the old dated brick and add river rock to the front....

SO MUCH MORE HAPPY!!! More comfortable living here, hubby said just the other week, why did we wait so long to do this... Well, kids, sports, life, money? Need I say more...
So I am stealing something I read over at Behind My Red Door's blog awhile back, This might not be my dream home, but IT"S WHERE DREAMS ARE MADE!!! So true, thanks Linda!!!

So as we getting ready to move things into their new home in the gathering room this weekend and get my mom ready for a liver recession in 2 weeks. ( keep your fingers crossed, they believe they can get the cancer out! the live is amazing organ)

This has been one crazy and sometimes painful year... But the end results have been worth it! thanks for taking this part of the journey with me!

So here we go..... Our home Last November as they were taking that UGLY brick off!!!!

Just this AM, sometimes I still have to pinch myself, I am so happy with the new look!
OK, tossed this in... why would I have a powder blue tub in the other house, after it took hubby 2 years of hard work, while helping his dad to do this??????? Again so happy with this bathroom... Downstairs still needs to done, but I think hubby & I both need a little break before we tackle that one!

OK, here is hubby's man cave... Really it's more like a over sized shed... He has wanted this for as long as we have lived here... He has earned it! With the gathering almost done, he can finally play out there and organize it...

OK, as was looking through pictures I came across this one... It's from almost 8 years ago when we completed gutted the kitchen... ICK that was UGLY TOO! LOL

So just a couple of pictures from last October as we broke ground for the kitchen. I could not believe how fast things moved after we decided to do this.. We thought it would happen this Spring, NOPE from the time we decided to do this, about 5 weeks passed until this....what a wild ride!
Look how close they can get that bobcat to the house without hitting the house!

There was a deck here, I went inside for what seemed like a minute and then the deck was gone!

OOPS, sorry about this one, forgot to flip it.... walls on the addition....

There's hubby in November sitting for the first time at the new harvest table we had just picked up! I had always wanted a harvest table, but it would never fit in the old eating area....

OK, here we are today gathering room just ready and waiting... tomorrow I promise

OK, Now I swore I would never show pictures of what the room looked like before! I hated it sooo much! It was ugly, so I just ignored it! Yes I have some great antique pieces down there, but I just kept telling myself they will look some much better once the room is remodeled...
Also, it's hard because this room really is the hub of the home, TV is down there, the computer. This is where we hang out as a family or the boys with their friends...
So here is the room a little over a year ago when Alex turned 21. He is sitting in the folding chair, boys everywhere... just not a pretty room, some pretty things, it just gets lost in the UGLINESS of the room..... Enough said, that look is long gone! :)

OK, so here's the front room, soon to be my keeping room... This is were the leather couch had to come with the TV... First time a TV has ever been in this room.. It's been cramped to say the least... Can't wait to fix this room back up too!
In all of this I really wanted new Johnston bench works for this room... Hubby wasn't having it... Still love what we had. Fabric was dated, I SOOO wanted new stuff... (You think I would be happy with all I have just gotten? Nope, tryed for one more!) WELL, didn't work. Compromise, re-upholstered the love seat & chair in Johnston bench work fabrics... Pictures on that later..
The cabinet in the back has been in hubby's family since about 1880! How cool is that, his mom left it to me when she passed away. I am soo blessed!

What a mess... but not for long!
OK now for a little tease, FINALLY.... Steven had school then work, so really without him not much I could move myself.... though I did get this in... My butter churn, I got this from my SIL last fall, so it's hasn't really had home until now.....

How cool is this? Love it!

Of course this will probably change some how, but it's something else for now...
I did a double take this AM when I got up and walked past the room... carpeting, no ugly flooring! It's a beautiful thing.... Thanks for taking this journey with me.
One might say now that this is almost done what will I do with all my time? Maybe craft more? yeah, right, maybe a I will read a book! More to come... OLM

First, I will keep your mom in my prayers. What a year indeed! My heart goes out to you.

And second, With all you had put into the house and have done since you decided not to move, I totally understand how you would stay. We have been in a similar place before. We almost moved about 9 years ago and then we went back and forth and like you, decided to not spend the extra for some gain but some lose too. Now that the two kids are out, and the economy took a nosedive, I am thrilled we didn't move. This has never been our dream house either, and it still isn't but it is home and it is all but paid for and boy, as retirement gets closer, that counts for a lot of peace of mind.

Your changes are gorgeous! Can't wait to see more of the house!!
